do this, not that. pt 2

Here we are again to the part 2 of my series of blog posts about things you don’t have to do at your wedding, and the substitutes or alternative things you can do instead. (Click HERE for part 1)

We have 5 things to go over, so let’s get started.

  • Long, plain wedding veil - Now this one really depends on the style of the dress. There are so many other types of veil at the moment. But don’t just choose a plain, long one, that looks like a net draped over your whole body. If you really want a long veil, do choose a veil with 2 or more layers. The layers will add structure to the whole look, especially if you gown is a mermaid style gown, or a simple, elegant evening gown style. You can also try a shorter veil with gorgeous detailing like lace, or intricate embroidery.  One of the biggest wedding trends for 2022 is the Pearl veil, where the veil is embellished with pearls all over. It is so simple, yet elegant and classy. If you really want a very long veil, choose one with a little bit of details on it, to make it more unique.

  • One big and tall floral centerpiece - I know this type of centerpiece is a classic staple at weddings, especially at big wedding reception venues, but personally, I find it distracting, especially the ones with just the tall pampas (yes, I’ve seen those at weddings!) It obstructs my vision of the other side of the table or some part of the venue. I don’t want to have to move my head just to talk to somebody across from of me, unless maybe, if the arrangement is extremely tall that it’s above everyone’s heads. If you don’t have a big venue with high ceilings, do a variety of centerpieces instead. Place 3 or 4 cute small vases around the table with different flowers on them. Just make sure the colors of the flowers are coordinated. Doesn’t have to be all flowers, you can do a variety of flowers and other items on there. I think it’s a better, and cheaper alternative to those big, expensive floral arrangements . Plus, there’ll be so many things to look at, at the table.

  • Pizza for snacks - I’ve been to some big budget weddings where, after the dinner, the speeches, and the program is over, and everyone is already partying, drinking, and dancing, there was a random announcement of pizza being served outside for snacks. I’m sure some people loved it. I appreciated their thoughtfulness, but I was still full from all the food I consumed an hour or so ago. If you have the budget for a pizza snacks, do a coffee bar instead. It depends on the venue, some hotels have that added service at the end of the dinner where you can request drinks like Latte or Mochaccino. IF not, you can rent a coffee bar cart instead.

  • Garter removal -  I love this part of the wedding, I think it’s so much fun watching the groom be silly in front of everyone, while trying to get the garter off his wife’s leg. But sometimes grooms tend to be over the top, with the sexy dances and wild moves. LOL. If you or your family is conservative, or you just find it cringy watching your husband do that in front of everybody, do a pre recorded video announcement saying something like: “Due to the sensitivity of the matter, my husband and I both decided to remove the garter in the privacy of our own room”. Now, the garter can be placed inside a balloon. Give a balloon to each of the bachelors in line, and then ask them to pop it one by one, whoever gets the balloon with the garter is the winner. But make sure to put something on each balloon, like may a candy or something else to make it heavier so it’s not obvious where the garter is.

Guest Book - you know the traditional guest book, right? Every guests sign their names to it, and then there’s a space at the bottom where they write “Congratulations”, and sometimes a piece of advice for the bride and groom. There are so many creative ways of doing a guest book, but if you have money to spare and want to be unique, you can do an Audio Guest book instead. I saw this at a wedding once, and it’s stuck in mind until now, because I think it was so brilliant and unique. If you are in Canada, there’s a Canadian company doing just that, they are called Fetefone. Try and check them out. They have different types of Telephone, depending on the theme of your wedding, from old school to modern ones.
