groom’s wedding cake

DO YOU NEED A GROOM’S CAKE?

Lately I’ve been seeing a wedding trend where there are 2 types cake displayed on the cake table. One is a traditional white wedding cake, with layers of elegant design, and beautiful flowers fondant, and then the other is a different cake, usually with a bit of color, and designed or picked by the groom. The most common I’ve seen so far are usually sports themed cake for the grooms.

WHERE DID GROOM CAKES START

I don’t know exactly how it all started, but I read somewhere that it started way back when brides wanted to give something to their grooms as a gift. Personally I think it is rooted from a compromise made by the bride and groom at one time, during their wedding cake decision making process. Usually when you choose a cake, you pick the design first,  and then you go to a cake taste session with the baker to choose which flavor the cake will be in. I didn’t go through all that when I got married because my best friend made my wedding cake. See, I don’t really have a big budget, (like I’ve already mentioned a lot of times in my blog), so for me to buy a personalized cake is out of the question. Lucky for me, my best friend knows how to bake, and he did our wedding cake. It turned out really, really good  My husband and I are both not picky, so we let him do whatever he wanted with the cake.

The compromise I was talking about earlier, was if the bride and groom could not agree on the cake design that they both like. That’s when the decision to have two cakes come into play. Sometimes the groom will just let the bride pick the traditional wedding, as long as he can get his own cake; something the reflects his personality and taste. This way, they avoid an argument that will add stress to both of them, and most importantly, they both win. It’s also one way of sharing “some” wedding decisions with the groom, because let’s face it, most guys just let the girls decide when it comes to wedding stuff. It’s easier for everyone that way. LOL.

I’ve seen a wedding where the groom is a huge fan of Spiderman, so they have a groom cake that is red with webs, and the spiderman logo on it. But it doesn’t have to be too whimsical to the point that it looks like a birthday cake, there are ways to incorporate your groom cake in a subtle way. I’m sure your baker will know what to do, or if you’re baking them, you can look at Pinterest for some examples.

Options for your groom:

  • Two Cakes - this is the one I’ve talking about, where there are 2 cakes displayed on the cake table. One, for the formal wedding, a traditional white wedding cake. The other is a smaller cake, picked by the groom, more colorful and fun

  • One cake, two designs - you have a groom cake but instead of a separate cake altogether, you have a the groom cake on the side. So it’s like two different cakes blended into one. One side is the traditional wedding cake, the other side is the groom cake. It is cheaper than having two cakes.

  • Cupcakes - order cupcakes or mini cupcakes with the theme or designs at the groom wants. Line those cupcakes around or beside the wedding cake.

  • Cake pops - cake pops offer such a good design element because it stands on its own , it’s also very easy to decorate. You can ask your groom-to-be what type of design he wants, or even just his favorite color, so that the baker can incorporate it in the cake pops. You can also do black cake pops, decorated with white buttons, making them look like tuxedos. Anything that matches the groom, or symbolizes something about the groom is enough.

  • One cake, shared layers- I’ve seen this type of wedding cake at a friend’s wedding once. It had multiple layers, but there was one layer in the middle which had a different color. I remember it was dark blue, and it was incorporated in the cake in such a cohesive way that it felt like it really belonged in there. I asked my friend, the bride, why it had a layer of blue, (I knew it was for the groom but I wanted to know why blue) and she said it was groom’s favorite color and the color of his favorite hockey team.

If you look at the picture below, you’ll see the first layer which is a different color. I’m not sure if that’s because it’s the groom’s request, but the my friend’s cake was similar to that. It blended well.
